Some employers are keen on the savings on overheads that telecommuting provides: less office space is needed and there are associated cuts in heating and lighting costs. Employees, too, save on the expense and time required for commuting. However, employers need to be satisfied with the amount of work getting done and its quality, while employees may feel isolated from colleagues and distracted by calls on their time arising from family or other domestic issues. Global business enhanced through teleconferencing Nowadays it is not only the largest multinationals that use teleconferencing. Advances in technology mean that it is relatively straightforward and inexpensive for organisations of all sizes to reap the benefits of these meetings conducted online through video and audio links. They can slash travel costs and enable colleagues who work in different parts of the country, or indeed the globe, to hold meetings and reach decisions without wasting time on travelling. While some people maintain that it is harder to forge relationships in a ‘virtual meeting’ than it is face-to-face, teleconferencing seems to be winning fans from all sectors of the world of commerce.
