πίεση, θλίψη = pressure (compression) – to press (to compress). ένταση, έκταση, εφελκυσμός = tension – to tense (to stretch). διάβρωση = corrosion – to corrode. αντίσταση = resistance – to resist (παράδειγμα).

Ερώτηση: A. Identify the defined verbs. 1. If you something, you get it back again (e.g. as a metal gets back its original shape). 2. If you something, you continue to have that thing, shape, property, etc. (e.g. as a ductile metal its new shape). 3. If you exercise or power, stress, pressure, etc. on something, you use it or put it into effect to achieve something. 4. If you something from somewhere or from a person or thing (e.g. stress from a metal), you take it away or off, or you get rid of it. 5. If someone or something a damage of some kind, (e.g. as a durable metal ___ corrosion), they remain unharmed or undamaged by it.

69): «it does not retain its new shape but it regains its original one», «it retains its new shape», «A durable material resists corrosion», «when the stress is removed»· το exert αντιστοιχεί στο «exercise or ... power, stress, pressure» (πρβ. «the exerted stress», σελ. 72).

  • Το draw έχει και τη σημασία «βγάζω, αφαιρώ» (draw something from/out of something) → όμοιο με το remove.
  • Το oppose (αντιτάσσομαι) → όμοιο με το resist.
  • Το αντίθετο του remove (stress from a metal) είναι το exert (stress on a metal): το κείμενο συνδέει τα δύο στη φράση «when the exerted stress is removed».
  • Το αντίθετο του loose (= lose, χάνω) είναι το retain (continue to have, διατηρώ).

Σύνοψη: (ενδεικτική) 1. a) draw → remove. b) oppose → resist. 2. a) remove → exert. b) loose (lose) → retain.
